Mayor Nowicki joined Red Cross Volunteer Cheryl Evans for today's deliveries of "Meals on Wheels"; Red Cross' program that supplies meals to vulnerable members of our community. Cheryl has been a Red Cross Volunteer for a number of years, becoming a volunteer in recognition of the aid that the Red Cross had provided for her terminally ill mother. Mayor Nowicki will help raise awareness about Meals on Wheels by joining Red Cross volunteers in delivering meals to vulnerable members of our community. Mayor Nowicki, on her second time of delivering Meals on Wheels, enjoys doing the deliveries, but warned, "It may take a little more time than usual, it gives me time to chat.". Prior to being Mayor, Linda was a realtor for a number of years in Wawa. The meal being delivered today was Pot Pie with vegetables on the side, soup, salad and a lemon tart. Although the dish with the pot pie and veggies looked a little bare, all the items were in separate containers to allow for eating items as part of another meal. Canadian Red Cross Meals on Wheels programs, like the one here in Wawa give vulnerable members of the community the opportunity to have nutritious and delicious meals delivered to their homes at a low cost. This enables them to maintain their health and independence. Darlene Trovarello, Community Services Coordinator explained, "Meals on Wheels is especially important to seniors in our community. Seniors are at particular risk of nutritional deficiencies if they live alone, are house bound, have limited income and are not eating from the five primary food groups. As the population of Canada continues to age, more people will be impacted by these issues. According to Statistics Canada, by 2041, 25 per cent of the population of Canada will be over the age of 65. Last year, the Red Cross delivered 1,700 meals to about 10 clients in our community. " About the Red Cross The Canadian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which includes the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and 187 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Our mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world. View the entire set on Flickr
