Superior East OPP sees far too many Motor Vehicle Collisions each year caused by the driver being listed as inattentive or tired. Much of our area is widespread with many long stretches between rest areas or communities. The past two years 20% of our accidents were attributed to this cause. Add the 35% that are animal related and they account for 55% of all our collisions. In many cases with the animal collisions if the driver was rested and alert they could probably have been reduced as well.
Section 130 of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario is the offence of Careless Driving which carries a minimum penalty of $485.00 and 6 demerit points. It spells out that every driver must drive a motor vehicle with due care and control. Falling asleep at the wheel is not having due care and control. The maximum penalty which we see all too often is death.
When you see that your mind is wandering or you feel sleepy, pull over, go for a walk, have a rest or quit driving for the day. You may be saving a life. Yours or that innocent family heading home for the holidays.
Superior East Detachment Commander, Staff Sergeant Dan Dawson reminds everyone to “drive to arrive alive”. Have a safe and Happy Civic Holiday Weekend.
