Oh Canada!, yes the Olympics have come to an end, finalized by our countries record breaking success at going for the gold and through it all the spirit has never ended at MHS! From the very day of February 12th there has been nothing but Olympic pride injected in every event here at the school. It all started with the success of the barbecue organized for Alan Syrette, which raised a total of 500 dollars! I think it’s safe to say, we rock.
The dedication does not stop there as students have showed supreme efforts at winning themselves their own gold medals by displaying one of the 12 character education attributes. Teachers have been on the lookout, making sure no good deed goes unnoticed. Everyone seems to be thoroughly enjoying the mock gold medals, wearing them in pride around the school. To keep everyone on their toes, Mrs. Pinder had offered a weekly quiz on the events held in the Olympics. Students scribble down the answer on to a slip of paper, and hope by chance that there name will be pulled out to win one of the awesome prizes. Congratulations to all the Gold medalists and the lucky library draw winners!
We’ve added a few new elements of fun to our hallways in the last little while. While roaming around the school it’s nearly impossible to not hear the whiz of ping pongs balls bouncing across the table and the thrilling cheers of students as they put their all into this favourite game. The addition of various game tables such as fuse ball, air hockey and of course ping pong, has induced a lot of positivity in the students as they can spend their free time participating in something they enjoy. Teams have also been created for those who love the rough and tumble of dodge ball, proving the end to boredom and the beginning of exciting days.
The aroma around the school has been tantalizing the past couple weeks as students have been seen banding together to host several lunches commemorating our athletes and their growing appetites. An Olympic feast was held on Febuary 17th and heaping bowls of homemade spaghetti were handed out to satisfy the growling stomachs of staff and students at MHS. The following week, on March 26th, the sweet odour of pancakes and waffles wafted through the halls as students passed out good old flap jacks served with nothing but a happy smile on the side. Boy, MHS sure has a flare for the culinary arts.
All the countries were lined up outside the school, displaying their pride on March 19th. Everyone was divided into teams, which reflected one of the countries participating in the Olympics. It was complete fun and games at MHS’s own 2010 winter Olympics as students could be witnessed tumbling threw the snow as they raced to the finish line on snowshoes, trying their hand at bobsledding down the hill, playing a game of soccer with a gigantic ball that had absolutely no rules! The tiredness of the students after the completion of events spelled success for yet another Winter Fun day here at MHS. A big thanks goes towards Mrs. Kusics’s girls gym class and Mr. Moore’s boys gym class for setting up the course and working as event organizers, pulling together an awesome day. And finally we have tallied the winners for our door decorating contest. It’s been decided that Ms. Rowe, Mr. Cliffe and Ms. Topham showed the most creativity! Classes had been assigned countries and decorated their doors according to the athletes, flags and past Olympic results of that country. Where will you be the next time Canada wins gold?
