Council began at 7 p.m. last nght with all members present. During the announcement period, Councillor Martin spoke lengthily in order to recognize the successful efforts  of our Canadian athletes during the Olympics and then locally of the efforts by municipal staff and the town of Wawa for their help with the Torch Run when it was here in January. He also noted that this weekend is the annual Wawa Ice Fishing Derby. He'd also like to congratulate École Saint Joseph upon their continuing the tin can recycling (you can read more here).

Council approved the minutes of the Regular Council Meeting of February 16th, 2010.

Mayor Howard Whent reminded the public that the Official Plan Public Meeting will be held tomorrow, March 3rd, 2010 at 7 p.m. in the Banquet Room of the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre.

Clara Lauziere, General Manager of the Northeast Superior Forest Community presented information regarding that organization. The organization was founded 2.5 years ago, and is the only site that is a blend of communities (Chapleau, White River, Hornepayne, Dubreuilville, Manitouwadge, Northeast Superior Regional Chiefs’ Forum and Wawa.

At this time they are working on four specific streams,
1) First Nation relationship building (Northest Superior Regional Chiefs; Forum, NSRCF Projects (traditional ecological knowledge, cross cultural awareness, softer gentler approach to forestry in the CCGP, relationship building),
2) Bio-energy and wood (Biomass Asset Mapping/Transportation Analysis, Client work),
3) Strategy and Policy Development (Youth Education, Marketing and Communications, Policy Influence and Government communication) and
4) NTFP’s which are non‐timber forest products (Blueberry Plantations, NTFP Opportunity Assessment, Fostering of Entrepreneurship, Development of a Regional Cooperative).

Right now they are concentrating their efforts on the wood allocation issue.

Clara noted that due to the forestry collapse, it has become difficult to determine the amount of biomass available since wood cutting has nearly ceased. This project will be revived in the future.

Next week the NSFC will be meeting in Chapleau to discuss this year’s business plan.

Clara explained why this organization is successful with this statement, “Power comes from within our communities – speaking as a collective strengthens the individual.”

Council approved the proclamation of “Purple Day” will be held on Friday, March 26th, 2010. Purple Day was founded in 2008, by nine-year-old Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia, Canada, with the help of the Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia, Purple Day is an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. On March 26, people from around the globe are asked to wear purple and spread the word about epilepsy, because epilepsy affects over 50 million people worldwide. That's more than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson's disease combined. Melanie Pilon is the local "Ambassador for Purple" for "Purple Day".

Council approved the donation of 100 Wawa Goose Pins for the Wawa Novice and Peewee Travellers.

Council approved the Business Licence Application for Mona’s Kitchen. Mona’s Kitchen is a small, seasonal operation that offers food during summer hours, and is located between the Wawa EDC building and the Pharmacy.

Council also approved the donation of a framed Wawa Goose Print by Michael Cleary to Mr. Peter Chalykoff. Peter recently retired after ?? years of service to the Township of Michipicoten/Municipality of Wawa.

Council approved the out of country travel for Lori Johnson to the Captain’s Weekend Cabela’s from March 4th – 7th in Detroit, Michigan. This is an invitation only event, and this is the second year that the Municipality has been invited to participate. Councillor Martin once again stated that he didn’t agree with the policy of out of country travel for anything but emergency – and didn’t approve the motion.

Council approved the funding application, Job Creation Partnership with the Michipicoten Golf Club. This is similar to the successful program that the two organizations participated in last year.

The following by-laws were read and passed:
By-Law No. 2316-10 - to confirm the proceedings of Council at its meeting held on the 2nd day of March, 2010,
