The Wawa Humane Society was called to the scene of a truck in the ditch about 12 kilometres south of Wawa late this morning.
Inside the vehicle, four people were escorting 13 purebred dogs to a weekend All-Breed Championship in Thunder Bay this weekend. The dogs varied from toy poodles and Yorkshire terriers to a Portuguese Water Dog and a Sharpei - "Harley"; and others in between.
Volunteers (Linda Nowicki, Brenda and Katherine Grundt) assisted with loading crates into a vehicle and taking them to Wagging Tails Kennels for safekeeping. The facilities at the Wawa Humane Society was not large enough to hold all of the guests at one time. It took 2.5 hours to ferry the dogs from the damaged truck to Wawa, but they appeared content in their new, warm quarters. Very fortunately the dogs were being transported in their crates and all escaped serious injury. "Sherman" a toy poodle, did manage to lose a claw during the journey into the snowbank.
One of the persons in the vehicle was taken to the hospital. Wawa-news was told that that individual would have to be flown to the Sault for further care. His companions then collected all their animals and headed to the Sault to rejoin their "pack".
Linda Nowicki, WHS President exclaimed, "They usually fly and say they will never drive up in the winter again. They will go as far as Ranger Lake this evening and stay at kennels there." They were very grateful and amazed at all the help they got and were still fighting back tears as they prepared to leave.
