Pukaskwa is one of the few locations along Lake Superior’s north shore where woodland caribou still persist. The infrared survey used last winter to count caribou in the Park detected 16 caribou along the coast versus only four detected by our traditional helicopter survey. Ecologists still believe the population remains too small to be considered sustainable and a single natural disturbance could wipe out these remnant caribou.
This winter, Parks Canada is working with partners to investigate actions that could be taken to restore caribou in Pukaskwa National Park for future generations.
