This Thursday (June 11th, 2009), the Ontario Federation of Labours Drive To Work caravan will be stopping in Wawa at noon for lunch in its province-wide trek. You are invited to join it at the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre.
The DRV2WRK caravan is travelling across Ontario with stops in over 50 communities to find out how the recession is really affecting working people across the province. You will have a chance to tell your stories or to send videos, letters, and ideas along with the caravan to be presented to the Premier on June 25th in Toronto. Blog entries are also welcome and may be sent to: Sheila Keenan (

Topics you may wish to talk about in your entry include:
How has the economic crisis affected you? Your family? Your community?
What do you need for yourself, your family, and community?
What services or supports will help you to get through the tough times?
How has the public sector supported your community through these hard times?
Has the public sector health, social services, programs been cut back?
Does your local industry need help from government to survive?
Could government help have saved lost jobs?
What local government-funded projects would help your community?

Wayne Samuelson, OFL president, will be on this leg of the trip, so we are lucky to have the opportunity to talk to him directly. The caravan encourages everyone to join the trek for a portion or all of the journey. You can meet the caravan in White River where it will stop at the Winnie-the-Pooh Park for a half hour coffee break with the mayor at 10:15 a.m. and accompany it into Wawa.
People from Dubreuilville can meet the caravan at Hwy. 17 and either wave it on or travel with it into Wawa to take part. For those wishing to travel to the Sault with the caravan, a pasta dinner will be waiting at the Union Hall on Dennis Street where speakers, including David Orazietti, MPP, can be heard. The caravan will spend the night at Bell's Point Campground before continuing to Elliot Lake and Sudbury where a "Sudbury Saturday Night" is planned. The caravan will overnight at the Mine Mill Campground before continuing south.
The itinerary and more information is available at www.drivetowork.ca. There are also links to the YouTube site showing footage of what is happening with the caravan.
A sandwich luncheon will be provided for all participants courtesy of labour unions at the Community Centre. Thanks to the Sault Ste. Marie District Labour Council, OPSEU Locals 611 and 613 and Helene Scott for their help and support to bring this event to Wawa.
