Hard economic times affect everyone in a community – business owners, workers, spouses, and children. Layoffs mean less money being spent and fewer people as folks are forced to move on to find work. Businesses feel the pinch and houses go unsold. The tax base erodes while social assistance needs increase – what’s a town to do?
One thing we all can do is come together to tell our stories to put a human face on the economic struggle we have here in our very own town. No matter what sector you are from, the downturn has touched your life. Write a letter, tell your story, or just come to show that you have a stake in this community. The Drive To Work Caravan (DRV2WRK) is being organized by the Ontario Federation of Labour so that all can share their unique viewpoints of how the recession is affecting our lives.
The caravan will arrive in Wawa, June 11th at noon (approximately) and, after a short tour of the town, will gather at the Community Centre for lunch (provided). Anyone who wishes can join the caravan for any part or all of its journey. People from White River and Dubreuilville may join the caravan as it goes by and participate as well. Anyone who wishes to carry on to Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, or Toronto is welcome and will be treated to food and various functions at the stops along the way. More information is available on the website set up to follow the caravan at www.drivetowork.ca or www.ofl.ca.
